If you get shoulder blade pain doing weights at gym, especially doing things like bench press or rows, here’s why, and how to stop it coming back… It’s extremely common to get upper back pain, at gym–muscles often tighten up over the rib joints, just in from the shoulder blade. But why? Any time your shoulder is pushed right back, like in Bench Press, Flies, Rows, Pec Deck etc, the inner edge of the shoulder blade pushes on your rib cage, forcing it to move in a direction it’s not designed to move in. And this can jam or irritate the ribs joints, causing “Rhomboid pain”. The higher the elbows, the less the shoulder joint can extend back, so the more the shoulder blade is pressed into the ribs causing upper back pain. The bench you use can make a big difference. A narrow gym bench can allow your elbows to come back too far, especially under heavy weights, or with a bit of momentum. So doing controlling how much your arms come back or doing chest press on the floor can really help.
