With halloween approaching, I decided to do a little craft with Charlotte to document her very first halloween. There’s not a ton you can do with a baby due to their limited fine motor skills and urges to eat anything and everything you put in sight of them. I quick browsed Pinterest before running to the store and found a bajillion hand/footprint ideas but settled on the simplest of them all. Two paint colors, a small canvas, paintbrush and some ribbon and we were in business! You don’t have to spend much to create something as simple as this…it’s easily done under $10. Such an easy little gift idea to use as a thank you for Grandma and Grandpa for watching your babe while you went out for some adult time. Charlotte loved getting her feet painted and giggled with delight. I’m a sucker for her little prints and I’m guilty of leaving them on the glass windows around the house for far too long. Why not document them forever? What you need: 1 Bottle black acrylic paint (I got the large bottle but the small bottles give you plenty enough) 1 Bottle white acrylic paint Additional paint colors for desired detailing 1 Foam paint brush (for canvas) 1 Wide brush (for hand/foot) 1 Skinny brush (for freehand lettering) OPTIONAL – 1 Spool of ribbon **4 hands or more** (In all seriousness, don’t try and do this alone unless done in the bathtub) Begin by painting your canvas black. I chose to do a more unfinished look with exposed brushstrokes. Feel free to get as creative as you want or create a solid black backdrop. Let paint dry completely. The canvas may soak up a lot of the paint so a second coat may be necessary. Waiting patiently to dry. Love her little piggies. My little helper. Checking to make sure it’s dry! Daddy’s home! Let’s get those piggies painted. Chad held her tightly while I applied the paint to her feet. Don’t go light on the paint…apply a medium amount so you don’t have to press hard against the canvas but not too much that it’s goopy without any sign of an actual print. I would highly suggest that you hold the foot vertically in the air with a firm hold. Next, bring the canvas to their foot starting at the heel and rolling it to their toes. DO NOT push hard, it will smoosh the prints together. Also, DO NOT let them step on the canvas…you won’t be happy with the outcome either. Bringing the canvas to their foot and lightly applying it to the canvas provides much more control over the print. Set aside and allow to dry! If you are happy with the simplicity of it, leave it! If you want to add a little something extra, create a fun little bow and attach with a hot glue gun. Display on your mantle, in their play room, or hang it on your door. Enjoy these little ‘holidays’ that give us many excuses to create fun, simple art that will makes us say ‘awwwwww’ when we pull it out of the storage boxes in the years to come (or cue the tears if you are anything like me). Their hands and feet will never stop growing. Catch them while you can!
