Title: A Problem Free Outdoor Heater
Review: Most people will want to buy this to heat their patio or deck. It mounts to the wall but also could be used on a stand if desired. To be clear, I did not buy 2 of these to heat a patio or deck but to heat 2 outdoor kennels for my German Shepherd Dogs, which I keep outside until it is time for bed when I bring them in the house.Regardless of the brand, no heater of this type is going to work that well whether mounted on a wall or self standing in an open area if it is windy. That is just the way it is. If you have a partially enclosed space which blocks the wind, you will do just fine. Now, the 2 kennels I have are open on all four sides but I have from fall to spring installed wind screens around all four sides of the kennels which are 10 ft x 10ft rectangles and 8 ft high. I have hung the heaters from the ceiling posts of the kennels and they work really well. Very easy to assemble. I have wall mounted heaters (different brand) on my deck and I can tell you that these would mount much easier than the ones I put on my deck. Piece of cake really. The package includes all of the hardware you need. I could mount these on a wall in less than 5 minutes. It took me less than that to hang them from the ceiling of the kennels. What about the remote? It works flawlessly and for my money it is essential, not just a convenience. I do not want to walk up to the heater and to turn it on or off if I do not have to. You can do it of course, but hitting the remote is far more convenient. It is easy to operate, self intuitive. You do not need instructions to operate it.As for heat, it has three levels. Level 1 is 900 watts, level 2 is 1200 watts and leverl 3 is 1500 watts. I find level 1 more than sufficient for temps in the 40s. I do not use it if 50 or above. (these are German Shepherd Dogs not people) That said, I am sure level one would be fine for the 50s for people. Level 2 I use for temps int he 30s. And Level 3 for the 20s and below. I have had the dogs out when the temperature was 5 degrees F and they did fine. Remember, these are infrared heaters, they heat objects not the air. So when the dogs stood or slept under the heaters, they were warm, despite the fact that air was quite cold.I warmly, no pun intended, recommend this product. It is first class in every respect.

Title: Staying warm in the PNW
Review: We live in the PNW, the winds up here and the rain makes it cold. We have 2 of these on our deck. We love coming outside and having dinner in the winter on the deck, these 2 make it easy to sit outside and enjoy it more. Am from California, I do not like the cold. The pros, easy to install, works well. The con is the don’t really blow heat around like I hoped it would. Still great buy for the price.

Title: Great heater addition to keep the back porch comfy.
Review: Just installed this heater as an addition to the propane heater. Using it for the raised ceiling height to 12feet. Open air 3 side screen porch covered, with ceiling fan on low, pushes that heat back down to keep the chill off.Had a small issue with heater part, customer service is on it. Very personal and friendly. Took care of it quickly.

Title: Looks very nice but under powered
Review: I had the best of intentions when purchasing this heater. My thought was that a single or double overhead mounted heaters could warm my 12×16 outdoor gazebo. So, I purchased two of these heaters, and decided to test them out prior to installation.I turned on both heaters to the L1 setting and could feel the radiant heat as long as I was within 5 feet of the unit. So, I bumped up the heat setting to L2, to increase the radiant heat. All worked well for a few minutes. I moved the heaters up to the L3 setting and all electric on the circuit immediately shut off. Well, I found out that my 15 volt 1725 watt circuit could realiably handle both heaters only on the L1 setting. The issue with that is the distance from the heater can only be about 5 feet away. The ceiling of the gazebo where the heaters were mounted is about 8 feet away from the closest seating area. With that realization, I mounted one heater directly above my seat around our fire pit. So, the heater became my personal heater as others seated in the same vicinity cannot feel the radiant heat.I packed up my 2nd heater and sent it back to Amazon. After all of the testing and installation of these electric heaters, I found that there is no substitute for a good propane heater. So, I will continue to use my new personal heater while purchasing another larger and more powerful (30k BTU) heater to warm the whole gazebo area. The alternative is to call in an electrician and swap out the 15 amp circuit up to a 30 amp circuit capable of handling 220 volts to ensure that our circuit will not trip. The cost for the electrician and the labor is approximately $1k in the S.F. Bay Area.I just purchased 2 of the 15k BTU propane tank top heaters. My plan is to add an 8 foot hose onto the tank and mount the burner up above our seating area at the 8 foot level. That should keep others warm under the gazebo during our Nor Cal winter.

Review: We use this on our outdoor patio. The heat is instant. Super easy to use and install. I wish I could plug a few more of these, but my electrical breakers wouldn’t handle it. It is great to the persons directly next/under it. I would love to have a few of these for each primary seating areas. My only wish, would be that that turn off timer could be a default. If you forget to set the timer and forget to turn it off, it stays on. I would love for it to just turn off after say, 2 hours.

Review: As a garage dweller, winter sucks. Having tried just about every *other* type of heater, I finally invested in this Dr. Infrared DR-238. Having now used it for 4 quite cold days, so far I’m impressed.First, the obvious things: it’s an infrared heater, i.e. it uses light you can’t see to heat things. It will heat black things more than white things, will be reflected by shiny things, and if you disperse it too far, it heats less. It will only heat the surfaces the light hits, not the air itself, so if you face it forwards, your back will not be heated. Usual misconceptions abound, however the benefit is that it isn’t trying to heat perpetually cold air/concrete and then expect that heat to reach you in a meaningful manner. Thus, you don’t need to leave a heater like this on for hours at a time to heat up the air. And the heat is, as advertised, direct and instant. It warms me up plenty while I’m out in a cold night having a smoke or tinkering with something on my workbench. It is quite large, larger than I expected from looking at the pictures, but once it’s up in the rafters it’s not that bad, and is able to cover a very wide area (where I’m standing to take that picture gets plenty of warmth). So in terms of actual function, it gets a 5/5 from me.That said, I have a very tricky relationship with the heat level settings. For reasons that might be a “my old house’s electrical sucks”, a fault in my particular unit, or a design defect in general, L1 and L2 cause my LED T8 fixtures on the same circuit to strobe significantly. L2 is worse than L1, and the problem disappears completely at L3. I suspect there’s some PWM shenanigans going on to get it to drop from its maximum power level, and it’s “backflowing” onto the rest of the circuit, which is a pain. I’m docking 1/2 star for this as it kinda sketches me out; I would be eager to hear back from the manufacturer about this (I have emailed), but it doesn’t *really* affect my usage of the unit since I intend to use it almost exclusively on L3. I did ask Dr Heater support about this but didn’t get any meaningful answer either way.The mounting hardware was simple to put together, and while I had to get creative with the mounting in my particular space to get it to heat where I wanted, it turned out well. I wish it could go a little lower in angle (perhaps 35 degrees), but the manual is extremely adamant – and the brackets constructed such – that this isn’t possible, so I’m stuck where it is. Would probably be nicer if I was able to mount it another foot or so back but alas, I can’t, and I’m not entirely sure why it can’t be mounted facing down if at a sufficient height. One complaint I have is with control, and relatedly, a question that was answered with faulty information and which influenced my purchase. A “seller” reported that, if the unit was put on a smart switch and disconnected from power, it would remember the last setting – i.e. auto power-on and go back to whatever heat level it was at. This is *NOT* the case! If the unit loses power, such as being shut off via a smart switch, you must use the IR remote to turn it on. This is my other docked 1/2 star.I get it, IR remotes are cheap, quick and easy. But *forcing* IR remotes is annoying. I get that this is a budget unit, but is a $0.05 4k NVM chip to retain state on power off really too much to ask when you’ve already built the control logic? I’d even prefer a switch and a knob version myself for “set it and forget it” operation with a smart switch, but alas it is what it is.All was not lost though, since as a tinkerer at heart who wanted this automated, I was able to achieve a working and safe setup by using both a smart switch (to ensure it is actually off when I tell it to turn off), and then an ESP8266 and an IR LED kit. The included IR remote is barebones and was easy to scan codes from (for reference, the decimal values are POWER_TOGGLE 33446055, UP 33472575, DOWN 33456255, TIMER_MODE 33480735, TEMPERATURE_MODE 33460335), so with just a quick bit of code and I was able to have a “switch” that rapidly fires the IR commands to turn it on and bump to L3 in under a second. Both the smart switch and ESP8266 IR controller are then hooked up to Home Assistant, which automates turning on both behind a single button (or complex presence detection automation, but that’s beyond the scope of this review).Of course, most people would just be happy with the remote and wouldn’t go to such crazy lengths for automation, so perhaps I’m being unfair in docking anything for all this, but I’m docking the rating mostly because this isn’t clearly communicated anywhere in the description or manual and there is a wrong answer left up in the answered questions potentially influencing buyers like myself, and because implementing state-saving would likely be trivial. All in all, despite my complaints, it is a good unit and I’m happy with it. I’d definitely recommend this if you want infrared heat in a decently sized space.
