*A Resilient Jungle Retreat: RL House in Lombok*
Nestled in the lush rainforest of Sandubaya, Lombok, the RL House stands as an architectural haven attuned to its natural surroundings and regional culture. Conceptualized by architect Wiyoga Nurdiansyah following the devastating 2018 Lombok earthquake, the A-frame home exemplifies resilience through its locally-sourced materials and strategic integration with the landscape.
Constructed primarily from Ulin, a strong Indonesian hardwood ideal for seismic areas, the pitched roof and elevated structure echo traditional North Sumatran homes. This nod to vernacular architecture paired with practical design choices create a thermally comfortable dwelling suited to the tropical climate.
Mindful material selection and passive ventilation techniques limit the RL House’s environmental impact. The slatted subfloor and open-air lounge optimize air circulation while the angled north-facing façade ushers natural light into interior living spaces. Rainwater harvesting methods and a backyard garden patch round out the eco-conscious programming.
Fused with contemporary conveniences, the interiors include airy bedrooms, a well-appointed kitchen and a spa-like outdoor bathroom encircled by bamboo. The seamless dialogue between man-made construction and lush jungle surroundings results in an intuitively inhabitable home, equal parts culturally resonant and sustainably conscious.
The RL House stands as a testament to resilient design, interweaving regional wisdom and ecological principles to create a comfortable jungle abode attuned to climate and place. Its strategic integration of passive strategies and locally appropriate construction reflects the ingenuity of vernacular architecture, envisioning a sustainable dwelling in harmony with the land.
