Flank pain at the side of the lower back always needs to be checked out carefully by a professional to see if it’s kidney related, but in many cases it’s actually a pain that comes from the lower back.
Pain here has one main musculo-skeletal cause: staying in a position that bends the spine to the side for too long. This can jam vertebrae in the spine causing pain, but also overstretch the muscle on the side—the Quadratus Lumborum, which reacts by clenching up.
