Check-In/Arrival Experience
Our arrival in Cancún was a whirlwind of excitement and slight frustration, a mix that set the stage for our much-anticipated vacation. The warm, tropical air that was thick with the aroma of blooming flowers and saltwater engulfed us as soon as we stepped off the plane. The airport buzzed with energy—families, couples, and friends all shared our eager anticipation. However, it was clear that we weren’t the only ones arriving in paradise; the immigration lines were longer than we had expected, snaking through the terminal like a slow-moving river.
Finally clearing customs, we emerged into the vibrant chaos of Cancún Airport, where colorful signs and the sounds of laughter filled the air. But our excitement was quickly dampened as we struggled to locate our pre-arranged shuttle service. Amidst the crowds of travelers and the cacophony of voices, it felt like navigating a maze. After a few moments of searching, we spotted our driver, who was holding a sign with our name and flashing a friendly smile. Clutching our bags, we finally felt relief wash over us as we made our way to the outside.
The drive to Wyndham Alltra Cancún was a sensory overload. As we cruised through the streets, the sights of Cancún unfolded before us: vibrant murals, vendors selling fresh coconuts, and the occasional glimpse of the sparkling sea. Our driver shared snippets of local culture and history, but the heavy traffic made the journey feel prolonged. Each red light and traffic jam tested our patience, and by the time we arrived at the resort, we were feeling a bit frazzled.
Upon entering the Wyndham Alltra Cancún, our spirits lifted instantly. The entrance was stunning, adorned with lush tropical plants and vibrant flowers that danced in the gentle breeze. We were greeted with refreshing drinks that tasted of fresh fruit and exotic flavors, instantly cooling us down and lifting our spirits. As we settled into the beautiful lobby, the decor struck us—bright colors, intricate tilework, and a welcoming ambiance that promised relaxation and adventure.
However, the check-in process was less than seamless. A backlog of guests meant that we had to wait longer than anticipated, and while the staff was friendly and eager to help, the slow pace felt a bit disheartening after our long journey. We appreciated the warm smiles and welcoming atmosphere, but the hurried orientation left us feeling overwhelmed with information. We wanted to soak in every detail about the resort’s amenities, but the rush made it difficult to retain what we were being told.
When we eventually found our room, it was a roomy, well-appointed space that promised comfort. The moment we opened the door, the refreshing scent of sea air wafted in. The room boasted a stunning view of the Caribbean Sea, with turquoise waves gently lapping against the shore. The private balcony was an inviting space where we could envision sipping morning coffee while watching the sunrise. However, upon closer inspection, we noticed some signs of wear and tear—scuff marks on the walls and a few minor housekeeping oversights, which slightly dimmed our initial excitement.
We were astounded by the beauty all around us as we ventured out to explore the resort grounds. The well-maintained gardens were a riot of colors, filled with palm trees, hibiscus, and bougainvillea. Yet, during peak hours, the pathways felt crowded, making it challenging to find a quiet spot to relax. It was as if we were sharing this paradise with every other guest, and the bustling atmosphere sometimes detracted from our sense of tranquility.
While the staff was generally attentive, there were moments of frustration, particularly at the pool and during dining. We often found ourselves waiting longer than expected for drinks or food, which interrupted our flow of relaxation. We occasionally wondered if we should have brought our refreshments because the slow service at the bar was ruining the sunny days by the pool.
Despite these small irritations, the excitement of being in Cancún and the beauty of Wyndham Alltra kept our spirits high. We were determined to make the most of our time here, embracing the vibrant atmosphere and welcoming nature of the resort.
Overall, while our arrival in Cancún was a mix of exhilaration and minor frustrations, the promise of adventure and relaxation was palpable. The stunning surroundings, coupled with a friendly atmosphere, made us hopeful for the experiences that awaited us. With every challenge, we reminded ourselves that this was a dream vacation, and we were finally in a place where relaxation and fun would soon reign supreme.
Value for Money
Considering the all-inclusive nature of our stay, we found the experience to be excellent value for money. All meals, drinks, and activities were included, allowing us to relax without worrying about extra costs. This made it easy to plan our days, knowing we had everything covered.

The Wyndham Alltra Cancun is celebrated for its exceptional service, with guests consistently lauding the staff’s friendliness and professionalism. While the hotel’s array of amenities, including varied dining options and a family-friendly atmosphere, are frequently praised, some guests have called out noise issues and outdated room decor. Some reviews from TripAdvisor:
AlanBC007 Spokane, Washington, An experience that will not be forgotten! Two years in the making! We carefully selected the Wyndham Alltra (WA) for our family vacation. Price point, location, and mix of amenities greatly informed our decision. The enthusiasm, especially for many of our group which had never traveled out of the US, was sky high! Our group numbered 15; children and grandkids and two grandparents, in 5 different units. First – the positives: We were pleased with the size of the resort and the variety of amenities and activities for the grandkids. The WA is indeed family-friendly! The food was better than expected and quite good on occasion. We had very little difficulty finding seating in each of the non-buffet venues for our large group. As others have mentioned – the staff are very friendly and attentive. I can only imagine how hard it would be for the WA to continue to succeed with out such wonderful, dedicated team members.
Jules New York City, New York9 contributions Paradise! This resort was nothing less than fun and beautiful. Our room was front facing the lagoon and we were welcomed to warm sunset views and calm waters every evening. The room was properly maintained and equipped with everything one might need on a quick trip like ours. The restaurants, especially the Italian and Asian were my favorite and go to during dinner hours. The buffet was amazing and had many options, especially being that my dietary restrictions are beef and pork. They are open until 11pm, so if you’re a night owl like me, you can grab a dinner plate and head to your room for the night! The service and staff were outstanding from the moment we arrived on the property to the moment we left. Armando and Ricardo at the lobby and pool bar were more than welcome, educated us on Mexico, and made us feel like we were at a home away from home. All in all, I would rate this resort 10/10. Though it is mostly fitting for families, I still felt like I had a romantic getaway.
10 Common Travel Mistakes in Cancún—and How to Avoid Them
Cancún is calling! You’ve booked your tickets, packed your bags, and the excitement is palpable. Whether you’ve been waiting for this trip for weeks or months, it’s essential to prepare properly to ensure a smooth and enjoyable vacation. While Cancún is a popular tourist destination, there are a few common mistakes travelers make that can turn a dream trip into a stressful experience. Here are ten pitfalls to avoid, along with tips on how to sidestep them.
1. Taking a Taxi from the Airport
The allure of a convenient airport taxi can be tempting, but beware! A taxi ride from Cancún Airport to the city center can cost upwards of $50 for just a 30-minute trip. Instead, consider pre-booking your airport transfer with reputable operators like USA Transfers. If you’re traveling in a group, you can book a van for a pre-negotiated price (around $40-60 for up to seven people). For solo travelers or smaller groups, check if your hotel offers complimentary shuttles or arrange private transportation through your host.
2. Not Negotiating Your Taxi Fare
If you find yourself needing a taxi, make sure to negotiate the fare before you hop in. Many travelers overlook this crucial step, which can lead to overpaying. For a budget-friendly alternative, use the local buses—R1 and R2 buses traverse Cancún and typically cost less than $1. They’re known for being safe, comfortable, and an excellent way to see the city.
3. Exchanging Money at the Airport
While it might seem convenient to exchange money at the airport, it’s often a costly mistake. Many shops and eateries only accept cash, so it’s wise to carry some. However, avoid those high airport exchange rates! Instead, wait until you reach Downtown Cancún, where local kiosks offer significantly better rates. A good rule of thumb is to carry at least 50% of your expected spending in cash.
4. Paying in US Dollars
In a tourist-heavy area, it’s easy to forget you’re in Mexico. While many prices may be quoted in US dollars, local vendors are more open to negotiation if you pay in Mexican pesos. Not only will you get better prices, but you’ll also immerse yourself in the local culture.
5. Buying the First Thing You See
Cancún’s markets can be a shopper’s paradise, but don’t rush into purchases! Many shops sell similar items, and you can often find the same product for a lower price elsewhere in the market. The deeper you delve into the market, the better the deals you may discover.
6. Being Too Shy to Haggle
Negotiating prices might feel uncomfortable, but in Cancún, it’s expected! Don’t hesitate to haggle; it’s part of the experience. A great starting point is to counter-offer half of the quoted price. Most of the time, you’ll meet somewhere in the middle, leaving you with a fantastic bargain.
7. Booking Your Hotel on Price Alone
While it can be tempting to choose a hotel based solely on price, consider location as a critical factor. Staying in Downtown Cancún offers easy access to shops, attractions, and restaurants, which can greatly enhance your experience. Plus, the convenience of being close to your hotel after a day of exploring can’t be overstated!
8. Booking Tours from Individual Guides
We’ve all seen those street vendors promoting tours, but be cautious! Booking with these guides can lead to inflated prices—sometimes double what you’d find elsewhere. For the best deals and reliable experiences, book your tours online or visit established tour agency offices that have clear details, photos, and authentic traveler reviews.
9. Visiting During Spring Break
Spring break in Cancún is known for its parties and packed beaches. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, consider avoiding travel during this time, typically in March. Prices soar, and crowds increase dramatically. Unless you’re ready to join the festivities, you might want to plan your trip for a quieter season.
10. Only Visiting the Main Attractions
While popular spots like Mercado 28 are worth a visit, don’t overlook other gems. Mercado 23 in Downtown Cancún is quieter and often cheaper. If you venture beyond the Hotel Zone, consider guided tours to destinations like Chichen Itza, Tulum, or Isla Mujeres. These tours often provide safe transportation and enriching experiences, allowing you to delve deeper into the region’s beauty and history.
When in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask locals for recommendations. They’re some of the friendliest people you’ll encounter, and their insights can enhance your experience in ways you might not expect.
By avoiding these common travel mistakes, you’ll be well on your way to experiencing the best Cancún has to offer. With a little planning and awareness, your trip can be filled with unforgettable moments, stunning sights, and the vibrant culture of this beautiful destination. Enjoy your adventure!
