In the heart of Fujian province, nestled among the rolling mountains and lush tea fields of Chi Xi village, a remarkable transformation has taken place. WEI architects, led by the visionary Na Wei, have breathed new life into a derelict house, creating a stunning guesthouse that seamlessly blends traditional materials and construction techniques with modern design sensibilities.
Known as Xiaoxi Jia, or Springstream House, this project serves as a beacon of hope for the impoverished village, which was among the first targeted by the Chinese government’s poverty alleviation initiative in 1984. Despite the village’s political status, which has hindered its development, WEI architects saw an opportunity to demonstrate how the renovation of existing properties can revitalize rural communities.
Using locally sourced materials, including reclaimed timber, stone, and windows, the architects carefully restored the two-storey building and erected a separate guesthouse on the site of former sheep pens. The construction process relied heavily on the expertise of local villagers, ensuring the preservation of endangered traditional techniques such as mortise-and-tenon joinery and transformational window-door framing.
The buildings’ curving tile-covered roofs, inspired by the surrounding mountains and the original house’s bowed wooden eaves, shelter verandahs that line both structures. The interior layout, centered around a communal hearth, pays homage to local traditions while incorporating modern amenities. Passive cooling and dehumidifying are achieved through strategically placed windows that harness the region’s seasonal winds.
The renovation process, documented as part of a national television show, has garnered widespread attention and brought valuable resources to the local community. WEI architects hope that this project will serve as a catalyst for change, breaking the deadlock of poverty and offering new opportunities for the people of Chi Xi village.
